Afro Lounge is initiated by Dj Cycle, vocalist Ariel Romero and flautist Mark Alban Lotz. Dj Cycle and Lotz have a history of performing and recording their interpretations of Afro Cuban religious folklore music. Their fascination for this music is quick-alive still. Ariel Romero lives this music: as first soloist of the Conjunto Folklorico de Oriente (Santiago de Cuba) and practicing Afro Cuban Santero. AIFF (Afro Influenced Funk Federation)

The Dutch musicians around DJ and producer Phil Martin and musician Ton van der Kolk play an enormous groove establishing their own version of afro-funk. Influenced by classic afro funk like Fela Kuti, they try to bring afro-funk to a new dimension. Like other actual afro funk projects, they integrate all their musical influences in their tracks. The favourite styles they melt to their unique sound range from deep-funk, soul and jazz to reggae and afro music. They just love all kinds of roots music.

AKA MOON

Image of 'AKA MOON' Returning from a unique time among the Aka pygmies of central Africa, Michel HATZIGEORGIOU, Fabrizio CASSOL and Stéphane GALLAND released their debut album, a recording soaked with the confidence eminated from their experience among the Aka. The seven compositions written by Fabrizio CASSOL combine improvisation and composition, polyrhythms and harmony, including new European jazz and traditional sounds. Al McKay

Image of 'Al McKay' Al McKay, born February 2nd in Los Angeles, California, is also known as the rhythm king, because of his unparalleled rhythmic guitar playing.

In the 60’s, he performed with the likes of Tina Turner and Sammy Davis Jr. and later went on to play with Isaac Hayes.

In the early 70's, he joined the band that gave him even more great acclaim, "Earth, Wind & Fire."

Al McKay, together with Maurice White, was one of the key members of the band who wrote and co-wrote a lot of groundbreaking songs for the group, like "Sing A Song" and "September."

While in Europe, he has performed and recorded with some of the finest European musicians (Niels Tausk, Klemens Marktl, Jos Machtel, Benjamin Herman, John Engels).

1995-2006 - has played on most majors festivals in Israel - Red Sea Jazz Festival (Eilat), Jazz at The Cinemateque(Tel Aviv), Israel Fetival, Jazz Days in Jerusalem etc.

Amina Figarova Trio

Amina Figarova is without doubt one of the most productive jazz composers and talented jazz piano players from Europe. Now living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Amina started playing piano and composing at a very early age. She studied as a classical concert pianist at the Baku Conservatory, jazz performance at the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Ana Beck Quartet

Image of 'Ana Beck Quartet' Ana Beck was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. With both parents being classical voice-teachers, it is no surprise that at the age of fifteen, she was already at home in the recording-studio and on stage. All over Brasil, she performed as a backing-vocalist for various Brazilian popstars.

In 1988 she ventured out to Amsterdam and has since been appearing regularly on stages in and outside of Holland with Brasilian bands such as “Trema Terra”, “Caja Manga” and “Alvorada”. With Alvorada she performed at the Northsea Jazzfestival 1995.

Andre van Berlo

Image of 'Andre van Berlo' Born in the Netherlands, January 14th 1976, André grew up in an environment filled with music but it took him more than 16 years to discover his passion for it. After his first contact with the guitar, he was 16 years old at the time, André didn’t waste any time and studied for many hours a day not being able to set the instrument aside even if it would be for just a brief moment. About 4 years later he got admitted to the Conservatory in Hilversum (now known as the Amsterdam Conservatory) where he studied with people like Peter Mingaars, Henk Sprenger, Theo de Jong and Johan Plomp. Andrew McCormack

Andrew launched his solo career in April 2006 with his debut album, 'Telescope' which gathered great critical acclaim and led to his receiving the BBC Jazz Award for 'Rising Star' in July 2006. Since then Andrew has continued to perform throughout the world with various groups including his own.

In 2010 he co-released 'MY DUO' with saxophonist and composer, Jason Yarde which launched at a sell-out performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the London Jazz Festival in Nov 2009.
Andrew has also been a pivotal member of the Kyle Eastwood Band which performs globally and has co-written some of the material on the latests albums.

Anne Chris

Anne Chris (Alkmaar,1977) concluded her vocal-training at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2003. That same year she made her debut at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague.

In 2004 Anne Chris’ debut-cd, ‘Tomorrow is Today’,was released by Stichting Jazz Impuls. The CD premieres 6 of her own compositions complemented by pop and jazz standards in original arrangements. She is accompanied by renowned musicians: Wim Bronnenberg (gitaar), Marcus Olgers (piano), Cord Heineking (contrabas), Martijn Vink (drums), Ruud Breuls (trompet), en Bart Fermie (percussie), sax-player Tineke Postma and the tablas-player Niti Ranjan Biswas. Anthony Braxton

Image of 'Anthony Braxton' Anthony Braxton is widely and critically acclaimed as a significant figure in the music of the late 20th century. His work, both as saxophone player and composer, has broken new conceptual and technical ground in the trans-African and trans-European musical traditions in North America as defined by master improvisers such as John Coltrane, Paul Desmond, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and he and his own peers in the historic Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM, founded in Chicago in the late '60s); and by composers such as Charles Ives, Harry Partch, and John Cage.

Antiphon Trio

Image of 'Antiphon Trio' Het Antiphon Trio is opgericht ter gelegenheid van de deelname aan het Prinses Christina Jazz Concours 2004. Zij behaalden uiteindelijk de derde prijs.

Morris Kliphuis (18 jaar) speelt al 12 jaar klassiek hoorn en besloot na wat jaren om ook jazz te spelen. Jazz op een hoorn bleek ook prima te kunnen. Het gevolg is een zeer unieke klank die vele nieuwe mogelijkheden biedt. Hij heeft les gehad van onder meer trompettist Loet van der Lee en jazzviolist en broer Tim Kliphuis. Morris zal volgend jaar beginnen met een conservatoriumopleiding jazzhoorn te Amsterdam. Hij is naast uitvoerend muzikant ook componist en won hiermee onder andere de MuziekOlympiade 2003. ANTOINE POLIN

Image of 'ANTOINE POLIN' Né à Paris en 1978, Antoine Polin commence la guitare à 17 ans et se dirige très rapidement vers le jazz. Combinant des études d’anglais et de musique, il obtient en 1997 une bourse du Berklee College of Music de Boston pour partir y étudier. Il est également lauréat d’une bourse de la SACEM pour le soutenir dans ces études musicales à l’étranger.

A Berklee, Antoine étudie entre autres avec Mick Goodrick, Bruce Bartlett, Ed Tomassi. Il y rencontre également le batteur Isaiah Ceccarelli avec qui il monte différents projets et se produit en Europe et aux Etats Unis. En 2000, il sort diplômé de Berklee Cum Laudare.

Armando Cairo Quartet

Na in 1983 op het Jazzconcours van het NOS Jazz Festival de VPRO-aanmoedigingsprijs gekregen te hebben, speelde tenor- en sopraansaxofonist Armando Cairo in talloze groepen. Daaronder de Frank Grasso Big Band, de Billy Brooks Big Band, de Dutch Connection, Fra Fra Sound en het Joe Malinga Septet. Tegenwoordig is hij muzikaal leider van de CREA Big Band en leidt hij zijn eigen Quartet.
Cairo heeft een van oudsher een voorkeur voor tenorsaxofonisten met het grote geluid als Don Byas, Eddie `Lockjaw' Davis, Sonny Rollins en Dexter Gordon. AsGuests

AsGuests has been, since its founding in 1997, essentially a collaboration project between vibraphonist Miro Herak and pianist Michal Vanoucek. As the name suggests many different musicians have participated with us under this name (including bassists: Brice Soniano, Gulli Gudmundsson, Janos Bruneel, Euan Burton ; drummers Joao Lobo, Vinsent Planjer, Yonga Sun, Marian Sevcik, Alyn Coskier, saxophone players: Paul Towndrow, Milo Suchomel, Radovan Tariska, other instrumentalists: Jeffrey Bruinsma, Benni von Gutzeit, Jorg Brinkman). Attraction jazztrio

Dit akoestische jazztrio brengt een programma waarin zangeres Atty de Heer samen met haar begeleiders Saco van der Laan en Theo Smit een sfeervolle en aangename ambiance weet te creëren. Het streven is om een hecht collectief te vormen en zodoende een zo uitgebalanceerd mogelijke klankkleur te bereiken. De compacte bezetting creëert een grote muzikale bewegingsvrijheid voor de drie musici, zowel in de begeleiding als onder de solo's. Improvisatie vormt daarom bij Attraction een belangrijk uitgangspunt. Atzko Kohashi

Image of 'Atzko Kohashi' Atzko was born and raised in Japan, and currently resides in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She began studying piano at the age of five and, soon after, began improvising and composing music. She is a self-taught jazz pianist. As a college student studying law in Keio University, Tokyo, she was an active member of the jazz big band, Keio Light Music Society. After graduation she appeared in jazz clubs in Tokyo, gigging in quartets and eventually formed her own piano trio. From 1994 to 2001, Atzko lived in New York, where she learned from jazz master Steve Kuhn. Her music was influenced by this association. Available Jelly

Through the years, the line-up and the repertoire of Available Jelly have changed many times. But there’s one thing that you can be sure of: there’ll be some strong melodies. The music can be wild, dense, smooth, empty, swinging or pointillistic, but it’s always interesting.
Available Jelly emerged from the Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe in the mid-seventies. A number of line-up changes later the group has developed into a constant feature of the Dutch improvised music scene. The music has maintained the theatricality and eclecticism associated with the theater but has gradually moved toward a more personal improvisational style.
